Jeep Compass Overview

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles after a long delay finally made their India debut back in 2016 with two exciting products which included the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee. Both these SUV’s were sold in the Indian market via the CBU route and thus were expensive and well above the reach of many. Jeep has unveiled the Compass SUV in India today, and the good thing is that the compact SUV is made in India product which also means that the new product will also be priced quite aggressively as well. The brands new product will be locally assembled at their Ranjangaon facility in Maharashtra from June onward. The new Jeep Compass replaces the old Compass and Patriot SUV in the International market, and apart from the Indian market, the same SUV is also produced in some other Countries as well. However, the good news is that India will be mother hub for right-hand drive Compass SUV from where it will also be exported to some other right-hand drive markets as well. Jeep Compass Design

In terms of design, the Jeep Compass has most of the elements one is looking for. The design has a good road presence, there is more than enough similarity to the Grand Cherokee. The Jeep Compass gets the seven slat front grille and somewhat hawk-eye line design. The higher spec model gets projector headlamps and daytime running LEDs. The bumper too is wide and its lower end is black matte to avoid any scratches on the paint if and when off roading.

The side profile does have the SUV like boxy styling, but the low stance makes it seem more like a crossover. The wheel arches are muscular and squarish. The door pillars are blacked out and there are roof rails too. The alloy wheels fill the arches well and they do not appear to be empty at any point. There are clean lines that run across the SUV. The rear styling of this new SUV also melds well with its overall design. The tail lamps are neatly integrated and they do look stylish. There is an integrated rear spoiler and reflectors in the bumper. The overall styling is just impressive and even the paint quality makes it feel premium.The Compass doesn’t seem to look very tall and its design will somewhat appear like a crossover. So, we aren’t certain on what will a buyer’s reaction to this design. The Jeep Compass India production will actually make it easier for the company to enhance their sales numbers as the pricing should be highly competitive.

Jeep Compass Cabin

The Jeep’s cabin is a pleasant surprise. Yes, the design of the dash is quite boring and there are a few not-so-nice bits of hard and shiny plastic – the piano black surrounds around the vents being a prime example – and the touchscreen is small and a bit fiddly to use. Also, it’s quite a step up into the cabin, and the sill is wide, and that could be an issue for short or elderly folk. Otherwise, everything on the inside is executed to such a high level that there’s a genuine honest-to-god luxury car vibe here.

The soft-feel textures, supple leather, superbly finished bits of chrome and a build that’s genuinely tank-like, all leave a lasting impression. Jeep has been bold and has specified this top-of-the-line Limited 4×4 variant with premium Alpine leather interior. The soft and supple seats are finished in ‘snow white’ which won’t be easy to keep clean, but they feel so luxurious. And that’s not it: there’s the leather-wrapped steering wheel that gives the cabin a lift, the padded door pads are superbly crafted, the metal-tipped gear knob that gets cooled by the air-con vents is an absolute delight to hold, and the graphics on the screen inside the instrument panel are clear and easy to read. However, the dummy switches on the right of the steering wheel are all too conspicuous and a glaring reminder of missing features. There is a bit of reflection from the dials, and storage space on the centre console is limited, but otherwise, the cabin is thoroughly practical as well. Space on the inside is huge, with plenty of leg- and shoulder-room, and the front seats are extremely comfortable. The bench at the rear has been changed for India. There is now a lot more thigh support due to the longer squab, the seat height is just right, and the backrest is a tad vertical, which, unlike the Tucson’s, doesn’t recline. In fact, rear seat comfort is where the Tucson is clearly better than the Compass and its limited width makes it only suitable for two adults.

Jeep Compass Engine

A 2.0-litre multijet engine will be powering the Jeep Compass India . This will be offered with a six-speed manual . This engine will churn about 170bhp of power and 358Nm of maximum torque. The Jeep Compass India will be coming with AWD versions. This engine is likely to be shared with Tata Motors, upcoming new Harrier platform SUVs. Both the companies have a JV in Ranjangaon. The company’s plant is undergoing expansion at the moment. The diesel engine will be shared with the Tata Q501. This is also likely to be made in the same Ranjangaon plant. An automatic will be offered on the Compass diesel, but that shall be some time in 2018.

Jeep Compass – Gear KnobThe petrol engine will be the 1.4-litre, which will come in MultiAir avatar. This will churn about 160bhp of power and 250Nm of peak torque. This will get a six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic (dual-clutch) transmission. Both these engines will be manufactured in India as well. This is the same engine that is offered on the Abarth family but it has seen a jump in its power and even torque. This will improve its performance and even the six-speed/seven-speed transmission will improve its bandwidth.Whats more, both the companies are looking at exporting their cars from India. Jeep has just announced that there will be two gearboxes, manual and automatic (dual-clutch), we reckon the diesel should get the automatic if not the petrol. The 2017 Jeep Compass even gets Select Terrain Management System, which helps to enhance the driving experience, especially when driving on different terrain conditions. This is useful when driving off the road, on slush or sand or snowy conditions.

The new Jeep Compass will return about 13km/l in the city for the diesel and close to 17km/l on the highway. The petrol will have a mileage of 9km/l for the manual and automatic in city and close to 13km/l on the highway for both. There shall not be a major difference in the mileage for both the transmissions on petrol. Now going by the ARAI figures, the 2.0-litre 4×2 will return about 17.1km/l and 4×4 has 16.3km/l. No numbers have been released for the petrol engine.

Jeep Compass Driving

The Jeep Compass‘s suspension set up manages to bring a bit of comfort, ruggedness and impressive handling. It gets a MacPherson strut set-up at the front and an independent Chapman strut set-up at the back with Koni’s frequency sensitive dampers. This system works like adjustable dampers without all the expensive and complicated electrical systems. It uses hydraulic valves to control how much damping happens, depending on the frequency of suspension movement – high frequency (when you drive over bad roads) will reduce damping for better ride quality, while low frequency (when on smooth roads) will increase damping for better stability and handling.

Does it work? Yes! Over bad roads, the Compass while happily absorb ruts and potholes without complaint and it also feels quite rugged. However, there is a fair amount of movement at the rear seat. At the same time, when on smooth tarmac, the Jeep Compass will stay surprisingly flat through corners even when you push it hard. At the same time, steering feels direct, weighs up well at high speeds and offers good feedback too. This makes it one of the most involving cars to drive in this price bracket.

Jeep Compass Safety

There are six airbags on the Limited variant, though lower variants could get fewer. Fog lamps get cornering function, and ABS, EBD, ESP are obviously there, along with electronic rollover mitigation. The showstopper though is Jeep’s trademark SelecTerrain system. The Compass is primarily front-wheel drive, but four-wheel drive is engaged full-time in auto mode and the system can power the rear wheels whenever it detects a slip. It also offers modes like snow, sand and mud with a mere twist of the rotary knob placed behind the gear lever. There’s hill hold too, and it worked excellently on inclines

Jeep Compass Verdict

The Compass is a seriously impressive SUV that seems to take full advantage of Jeep’s experience with SUVs. In fact, look deep into its headlights, past that seven-slot grille, and you can see the years and years of know-how shining through. Prices for the Compass diesel start at a very competitive Rs 15.45 lakh (ex showroom Delhi), with this top-of-the-line Limited (O) 4 X 4 going for Rs 20.65 lakh. What you get for your money is real off-road ability, strong dynamics and plenty of luxury and comfort on the inside. Sure, the touchscreen isn’t really what’s expected of a car in this class and there are important bits of kit missing, like a sunroof; and those interested will have to contend with Fiat’s less-than-fantastic dealer network. Rear seat comfort could have been better for this segment, and those looking for a diesel automatic SUV will be disappointed as the Compass will get that only at a later stage. But this SUV’s fundamentals are so strong, it’s difficult not to compare it to cars from a class above, like the Volkswagen Tiguan which is a lot more expensive at where it stands today. And that’s the real kicker – the Compass may just be the value luxury SUV you have been waiting for.
