Maruti Suzuki India has given comprehensive cosmetic updates to Ciaz, which now gets additional features and a new engine. The all-new Maruti Suzuki Ciaz images show that it sports bolder styling. The company has also included additional tech. One of the prominent changes on the new Ciaz is Suzuki’s 1.5-litre K-Series petrol unit, which has replaced the previous 1.4-litre engine. The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz variants include both petrol as well as diesel trims in manual and automatic versions. There is no doubt in the fact that Ciaz is already a good looking sedan so do not expect any significant cosmetic updates to the exterior. However, to keep things fresh it will receive minor updates in the form of a new restyled grille with lots of chrome on it while you can also expect some chrome garnish to be present on the front bumpers as well. There won’t be any changes made to the side profile though, but you can expect the sedan to sport new set of alloy wheels while the door handles might also get a dash of chrome. Towards the rear profile, the car won’t receive much of a change either expects few updates here and there. Like the pre-facelift variant, the Ciaz will get fewer badges towards the rear because it is now being sold through their Nexa dealerships.
To sum up, Maruti will try every trick in their book to make their flagship sedan look premium and upmarket. The addition of chrome bits and less sticker work on the exterior will further help the Ciaz sedan feel more upmarket.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Cabin
The new Ciaz is not much different from the previous model as far as interiors are concerned. The moment you step inside, you will find familiar milieu. You won’t be getting any surprises here as the layout as ditto. But what you would really appreciate immediately when you hop on the driver’s seat is how easy all the things falls into your hands. The steering, the switches for climate control, power windows and boot release button, all comes handy as if you wanted them to be as it is.
Now as you have jumped onto the commanding position, you would notice the new features that have been added to this new version. The 4.2 inch TFT multi-information display with new dials in blue grabs your attention. The screen is the same which working in Baleno with the power and torque pie charts seems to be a clever manoeuvre, it can plaster a smile on your face the moment you stare at it. The display shows vital information about the car including fuel consumption, trip details, energy flow, gear shift indicator and driving range. The new cruise control feature let you pick up any speed above 40kmph making your highway journey comfortable.
The second change you will notice is that the steering wheel no longer remains blank. It now houses switches for the cruise control. Those who have eagle’s eye will also spot the finishing in the form of wood inserts which has been significantly made lighter which the Maruti calls as ‘birch blonde’. If you are transported around, you will definitely notice the utter kneeroom and legroom this car offer to the occupants. This comes on par with the popular Honda City absorbing 2 six-footers one behind the other without any problem. This is because the Ciaz is the biggest car in the segment measuring 4.5m in length. And the thing that would make your journey a bit comfortable is the new adjustable headrests at the back. Unfortunately, this feature is only available in the top of the range variants. Similarly, the sunshade which keeps you cool in times of scorching heat, is only available in the top Zeta and Alpha variants. However, as expected from Maruti, the basics have been aptly done, the floor bump is not too high, so the window line while the presence of fabric/leather elbow pad enhances comfort. But the headroom and the under-thigh support could have been better. For more info on Ciaz check Changeonslapac
Further, mostly like the earlier model, the new version seems to be well-equipped for the price. The sedan comes with 7-inch touchscreen infotainment powered by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The same infotainment can be used for connecting the smartphone via Bluetooth, USB and Aux-In along with in-built navigation, Mirror Link support and relaying feeds of the rear parking camera. Other comfort features in the car include automatic climate control, rear ac vents, electrically adjustable/foldable ORVMs and height adjustable driver seat.
The premium factor is enhanced by leatherette upholstery, chrome garnish on the steering, ac louvers, parking brake, floor console and inside door handles as well as leather wrapped steering wheel. Surprisingly, Maruti has avoided the sunroof for unknown reasons. In terms of storage and utilities, there is front centre armrest with utility box, rear centre armrest with cup holders, front and rear accessory socket and sunglass holder. The boot space is generous at 510L which is equal to Honda City and better than Hyundai Verna.
Overall, the cabin of the new Ciaz is well equipped and sufficient enough to keep the youth happy and comfortable.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Engine
Maruti had organised a test drive of the 2018 Ciaz and the only powertrain made available was the new 1.5-litre K15 petrol engine paired with the five-speed manual and the four-speed automatic. I didn’t get to drive the 1.3-litre DSiS diesel engine, which doesn’t see any change in its performance parameters, except the addition of the torque assist function.
The new K15 petrol engine is essentially the same basic platform of the previous model’s K14, but now gets a larger bore and stroke (74 mm x 85 mm) to offer a 1,462 cc capacity. This engine combined with the smart hybrid system delivers 77 kW of peak power and 138 Nm of peak torque, both of which are up 13 per cent and six per cent respectively over the predecessor.
The K15 engine feels peppy and free-revving in the manual gearbox variant, with the smart hybrid motor’s torque assist probably helping in marginally improving acceleration from slow speeds. But, the four-speed automatic does feel more laboured and louder before expected levels of acceleration can be experienced. There is no manual, sport or triptronic mode in the auto gearbox, but there are two low gear ‘L’ and ‘2’ modes, both of which are expected to help handle high-rev, high torque demand such as during a hill climb, and the transmission stays in the first gear and second gear respectively.
The new Smart Hybrid system in the 2018 Ciaz is a substantial change over the simple start/stop system of its predecessor. The new system gets a compact lithium-ion battery and more capability. In addition to the standard mild hybrid functions like idle, start/stop and brake energy regeneration, the new smart version features a 2.5 kW electric motor that offers torque assist also. Behaving essentially like a parallel assist system, the battery-driven motor offers additional boost to the torque delivered by the engine. Maruti officials say that it is difficult to put a number on the exact amount of assistance offered. But the motor helps deliver a cut in the emissions during the initial combustion cycle and also helps boost mileage marginally.
The new compact Lithium-ion battery is said to be capable of longer service life and also handles quicker charging-up and discharge cycles better. It enables the motor’s torque assist when it has a minimum charge of 30 per cent. The other electricals continue to be powered by a regular maintenance-free lead-acid battery. The mild hybrid power management system is designed to allow regenerative braking to charge up the lithium-ion battery first and the spill over if any to also juice up the regular battery pack. The smart hybrid system is standard across all variants and for both the petrol and diesel powertrains.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Riding
The ride and handling of this sedan is absolutely predictable. And unlike the predecessor SX4 which had a stiff suspension, Ciaz comes with soft suspension which offers absorbent ride quality at lower speeds. The car feels nice and composed on smooth roads and feels planted on high speeds, enough to instil confidence in the driver. Having said that, at high speeds especially above triple digit speeds, the rear passengers would feel vertical bobbling when the vehicle goes over an undulation on the surface. At lower speeds too, the ride is comfortable and the ground clearance is also not a problem either as the car is capable of handling the non-existent road quite well. However, you would feel vertical movement when going over some bad craters. This is due to soft damping, so the ideal way is to make the most out of joyful ride, drive it on the highways. In terms of handling, the car has been crafted to make the driving more relaxing, not engaging. And the sheer example is that the steering weight has been tuned to be feather-light in cities while solid on highways. Throw it at the corners and the steering is practically quick but don’t expect loads of feedback.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Safety
Braking is balanced and there is short pedal travel before the brakes bite. Hard braking will make the car feel stable and maintain composure at the same time. And it seems ABS comes into action unexpectedly earlier which is a good thing. As far as safety kit is concerned, the standard list of features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat anchorage and pedestrian protection compliance and seat belt pretensioners with force limiters. Other advanced feature include ESP with hill hold assist, automatic headlamps, reverse parking camera, rear defogger, driver and passenger seat belt reminder and speed alert system.
