Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Overview
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, the most-selling compact SUV in India has two big things working its way – 1) It is a Maruti product and 2) It is a compact SUV, the fastest growing segment in India. A lot of people, who are either upgrading their car or buying a new car want to own a compact SUV and their reasons are obvious. A compact SUV not only tackles the bad roads in India, but is also spacious, and adds to a status value of a middle-class Indian, the biggest market for any manufacturer to tap for.
Maruti, being a prominent player in the country (with over 53% market share) catered to this growing demand of consumers by launching their Vitara Brezza compact SUV in March 2016. Within 20 months of its launch, more than 2 lakh people bought this car. A lot of queries from new buyers come to us regarding the Vitara Brezza and this is why we opted to drive the SUV for a period of at least a couple of months to realize its full potential, and shortcomings. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Design
Vitara Brezza is wider than other cars in its segment like the EcoSport and the Creta but is only 20mm taller than Maruti\’s own Ritz hatchback. It has more ground clearance than Mahindra’s TUV300 and Creta but less than that of the Duster and EcoSport. On paper it’s an SUV but in real, the Brezza looks more like a grown up hatchback. Brezza’s dual tone exterior colour theme with the roof being finished in a contrasting colour sets it apart from the crowd. Sadly, dual tone exteriors are only offered on the top end ZDi+ model. Front end design is dominated by a chrome grille. The headlamps get L shaped DRLs and indicators are uniquely placed above the fog lamps. Brezza gets silver finish skid plates at either ends. Brezza gets a flat roof that makes it appear a bit like the Evoque – especially in dual tone options. It rides on 16-inch alloy wheels on the top-end version and they fill up the wheel arches nicely. To complement the SUV look, we would have liked a thicker cladding on the sides. Brezza’s rear is not as exciting as the front but it is smart nevertheless. The heavily chromed lip above the number plate looks nice.

Though space is more than ample up front, the quality of materials used is not the best in segment. The top end version comes loaded with lot of creature comforts but yet, at the back, you do not get air-con vents. Space at the rear is good for two but just about ok for three. Brezza is available in India with 6 variants. The base variant is the LDi variant that gets driver side airbag, dual horn, music system with USB, aux-in and Bluetooth connectivity, front power windows, electrically adjustable ORVMs and tilt steering. LDi(O) variant is the one that gets more safety features compared to the base variant. This variant however doesn’t get dual front airbags and other safety features that LDi(O) gets but LDi doesn’t. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Engine
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza is powered by a 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine good to deliver 66kW of maximum power at 4000rpm. Being a diesel engine, low end torque is a healthy 200Nm that kicks in at 1750rpm. The diesel engine is paired to a 5-speed automatic transmission and Maruti Suzuki claims 24.3kmpl fuel efficiency figures for the Brezza. Brezza is still a new product in Maruti Suzuki’s line up and is therefore available with a diesel engine only. There are rumours that Maruti Suzuki will also launch petrol Brezza in India in due course of time. The diesel Brezza is available with a manual transmission only although this engine is available in Dzire with an AMT as well.
One of the strongest Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza features is the famous 1.3-litre diesel unit. Capable of producing 89 Bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza transmission is a powerful one by all means. Most of the automobile engines kick off after reaching a speed of 2000 rpm. The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza is no exception. This vehicle has a noteworthy mid-range torque. This vehicle can cruise noiselessly once it reaches a speed of 100 kmph and at 2100 to 2200 rpm. You have a five-speed manual transmission gear box that looks crisp.
The Brezza comes powered by a 1.3-litre diesel engine found in other Maruti cars as well. In the Brezza’s case, it puts out 90PS of maximum power and 200Nm of maximum torque (and hence the name DDiS200). It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Maruti Suzuki is not offering a petrol engine on the Brezza as of now (which the EcoSport offers) or an automatic transmission (the EcoSport has a petrol A/T, the TUV3OO has a diesel A/T). The engine is good for highway usage but turbo lag becomes evident when driving in the city. The engine is very efficient though, with Maruti Suzuki claiming 24.3kmpl fuel efficiency. In real world driving conditions, the Brezza can return anywhere around 15kmpl in city and around 18-10 kmpl on highways under sedate driving. Even if you’re relentless, the engine should still be able to deliver over 10-12kmpl.
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Rideing
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza features a powerful 1.3-litre DDiS 200 diesel engine. This 1248 cc power train that is intelligently mated to a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox can produce 89 bhp of power at the rate of 4000 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at the rate of 1750 rpm. The handling of this car is pretty smooth, thanks to its low turning radius of 5.2 m and an electrically-powered steering wheel. The front wheel of this compact SUV is fitted with McPherson Strut and the rear axle has a Torsion Beam mechanism to provide riders a smooth and bump-free ride.
The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza comes with a balanced ride quality, good enough to absorb most of the crevices on some of the worst roads you can ever travel. Also, the sound insulation from the atmosphere and engine cabin is equally impressive, something that one can vouch for.SUVs are never associated with having good city handling, thanks to heavy weight and wide tyres, that results in a heavy steering. Now the Vitara Brezza is no SUV in terms of the weight 1200kg), neither it has very broad tyres (205/60 R16), but it’s still bigger and heavier than any of the hatchbacks in the market. However, the handling is at par with hatchbacks, good enough to tackle city traffic.
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Safety
A mere glance at the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza specifications would be enough to make you realize that there is no compromise on the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza Braking and Safety aspect. Each variant of this Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza model has ventilated brakes from the front wheels. At the same time, you have drum brakes for the rear wheels. The driver airbag is a common feature in all the variants with the higher variants having passenger airbags as well. The anti-lock braking system coupled with the electronic brake-force distribution in some of the higher variants makes this vehicle a very safe one. This makes Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza handling quite easy. The parking sensors are an additional attraction in the higher variants. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Verdict
Vitara Brezza had created an immense amount of buzz and it delivered a hammer blow with its ‘introductory’ pricing. The base variant starts at 6.99 lakh while the top trim with contrast roof option would retail for 9.68 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi. Driver-side airbag comes as standard, while there’s an option to upgrade to passenger-side airbag and ABS-EBD with every trim level. There’re all other fashion items on the list — rain sensing wipers, reverse-parking camera, projector headlamp, Apple CarPlay, navigation, and music playback through all kinds of systems, from Bluetooth streaming, to USB. Heck, it’s even got cruise control! It’s a well-packaged, well-rounded vehicle with no acutely deterring facets and fits the bill to the T for nuclear families. The only issue is, Ford, as a corrective measure, and a reaction to Vitara Brezza’s aggressive pricing, just yesterday, announced a dramatic price slash for its EcoSport — the diesel model, which is comparable to diesel-only Vitara Brezza, now retails between 7.29 lakh to 9.75 lakh ex-Delhi, which achingly close to the fresh new Maruti here.
