How to use it

Scholarship forms often ask for a percentage when your marksheet gives a CGPA. Use the formula of the body that awarded the CGPA, not a general one: the same CGPA gives a different percentage under different rules. Pick the board or university, enter the CGPA, and the converter shows the percentage with the formula and its source.

If your grade card or transcript prints its own conversion formula, that formula prevails. Formulas for other universities are added only after we find them in an official notification.

Formulas used, with their sources

  1. CBSE Class X (CCE grading): overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 x CGPA, and the subject-wise percentage = 9.5 x the grade point of the subject (CBSE, CCE certificate format, cbse.gov.in).
  2. Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes: percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) x 10 (vtu.ac.in, CGPA standard formula).
  3. APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU), B.Tech 2019 regulation: equivalent percentage of marks = 10 x CGPA, replacing the earlier formula (KTU U.O. No. 1584/2023/KTU, 29 June 2023).
  4. BIT Sindri (Jharkhand University of Technology): percentage marks = (CGPA - 0.5) x 10 (BIT Sindri Academic Section certificate No. Acad/456 of 1 September 2023, citing clause 9.5 of the Jharkhand University of Technology B.Tech ordinance).

Questions and answers

Can I use the 9.5 rule for my university CGPA?

Only if your university has adopted it. The 9.5 factor is CBSE's rule for its Class X CCE grades. Universities notify their own formulas, and a provider that asks for a percentage usually expects the one your university uses.

My university is not in the list. What should I do?

Look at the back of your grade card or the university's examination notices; most universities that use CGPA publish a conversion rule. If the university has none, attach the grade card and mention the CGPA as it stands.

Does the converter round the result?

It shows two decimal places, as you would write them on a form. If the provider asks for a rounded figure, follow its instruction.
