PhD fellowships in India: stipends and last dates, 2026

5 fellowshipsKept current as entries are added

Fellowships that pay for doctoral research: Junior and Senior Research Fellowships through the NET examinations, the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship, agency fellowships from bodies such as CSIR, UGC, DST, ICMR and ICAR, and institution fellowships. Each entry gives the monthly stipend, the contingency or research grant, the tenure and the last date.

Compare fellowships on all four, not on the stipend alone: HRA depends on your city and on whether you live in a hostel, and the contingency grant differs between agencies and between the sciences and the humanities. The fellowship stipend calculator totals them over the tenure. Keep your postgraduate marksheets, the NET or GATE scorecard, the PhD registration letter and a research proposal ready.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between a JRF and an SRF?

A Junior Research Fellowship is the entry level, usually for the first two years of a PhD; after an assessment of your progress it is upgraded to a Senior Research Fellowship at a higher stipend. CSIR, UGC and DST INSPIRE fellowships all follow this two-step pattern.

Do I need to clear NET for a PhD fellowship?

Not for all of them. CSIR and UGC JRFs are awarded through the NET examinations, but other fellowships select through GATE scores, their own tests or institute interviews. The eligibility section of each entry names the qualifying test.

How much is a JRF stipend now?

CSIR, UGC and DST pay Rs. 37,000 a month for a JRF and Rs. 42,000 for an SRF, the rates in force from 1 January 2023, plus HRA where it applies and a yearly contingency grant. The stipend calculator works out the total for your city.
